*Columbia Heights Salon Series- I'm a featured artist in the Casa de Canvas!*
Date: Saturday, May 22, 2010
Time: 6:00pm - 10:00pm
Location: The dynamic Columbia Heights neighborhood in Washington, DC
In Columbia Heights, springtime means a return to Malcolm X Park for the Sunday afternoon drum circle, brunch on the patio decks of local restaurants, and lounging on the lawn of your friend's house.
... Of course, it also means the Columbia Heights Salon Series is back in bloom, too.
Back in the Victorian era, salons were the gathering places for people of high society to mix, mingle, and mull over topics of discussion like politics, as well as come together for the arts. CHARTS is bringing that concept to Columbia Heights once a season, by having four "salons" to visit, where people can peruse the neighborhood and experience different thematic elements of art in a relaxed social setting -- and allow them the opportunity to meet their very creative neighbors.
Powered by CHARTS (the Columbia Heights Arts Foundation), here are the four Salons, all within the same one-block radius. Feel free to join each one at your leisure:
♥ "Performing Arts Place" (1316 Kenyon Street NW) -- highlighting select scenes by our friends at Third Beat improv; routines by comedians Mike Blejer, Reggie Melbrough, Brandon Wardell, and Mike Curran; a vocal performance by the a capella group SongRise; acoustic sets by singers/songwriters Spencer Thanhouser and Chris Hooten; a classical duet by musicians Ness Zolan and Hannah Neprash; a soulful performance by THE Dubber; a set by Erin + Sophie; and an open mic for other performances as time allows!
---
♥ "Casa de Canvas" (3209 13th Street NW) -- featuring work by artist Jennifer Droblyen; mixed-media pieces by artist Claire Briggs; charcoal sketches by artist Xi Chen; plus a traveling exhibition by Columbus, Ohio-based artist Stacey J.
---
♥ "Digital Media Den" (3016 13th Street NW) -- showcasing travel photography by Deena Delfosse and Natasha Bowens; work shot in-and-around DC by photographers Ben Droz and Shara Riesz; a photography installation by artist Jennryn Wetzler; and a short film by visual artist Casey Girard!
---
♥ "Installation Station" (3209 13th Street NW, basement) -- occupied by mixed-media sculpture from artist Serinity Knight and pieces by Colleen Wallace. DJ Ben Black will also be spinning in the outdoor garden.
Additionally, with springtime "in bloom", we're collaborating with our friends at BloomBars (3222 11th Street NW) to host the "Creative Collaborations Courtyard" featuring artistic collaborations by local artists, including:
→ an interactive installation by conceptual artist J9 and photographer Omar Qazi;
→ a dramatic live performance featuring the writing of poet Taylor Ahlstrom as interpreted by a series of actors from the Third Beat improv conservatory project;
→ a musical set by tap dancer Melissa Frakman providing percussion to guitarist/composer & BloomBars artist-in-residence Gary Prince;
→ a collaborative set featuring Eli Cohn of the band Stripmall Ballads and local folk-rock phenom Phillips Saylor; and
→ a special, one-night-only show with vocalist Nicola Molinaro accompanied by classical musician Amber Walson.
** Suggested donations of $5 at each venue will be shared equally with the artists who are presenting their work, and with the salon hosts, to offset the cost of their time and energy in creating art to be shared/opening their homes to the community. **
*Collaborations/ Exhibitions/ Commissions*
*I'm always looking for collaborations with other artists or opportunities to exhibit. If you have an idea for a commissioned piece, please contact me at jennifer.droblyen@gmail.com.
Thanks!*
